Private Client Solicitor

Reporting: Head of Private Client

Office Location: Kendal or Windermere

Overall purpose: We are looking for a passionate and approachable individual to join our Wills, Trust & Probate Department. To make a positive difference to our clients – to provide outstanding client service and excellent levels of technical guidance to our clients to support them to protect their future and the future of their loved ones. Our team love to develop and build lasting client relationships as well as building their own knowledge and skills to be the best they can be. This role is available on a full or part time basis.

Key accountabilities:

  • Assisting with and progressing a caseload of Wills, probate and estate administration matters, with supervision and support
  • Taking clear instructions from clients and providing a professional, empathetic level of client care
  • Drafting Wills, probate papers, LPAs and related correspondence for review and approval
  • Ensuring files are managed accurately and compliantly in line with SRA and firm procedures
  • Working collaboratively within the Private Client team, supporting colleagues and developing technical skills

Person specification: 

  • 1 year + PQE
  • Strong client care skills and a sensitive, professional approach
  • Confident managing your own caseload with training provided
  • Willingness to travel to other offices or client meetings when needed
  • Self motivated

  • Managing a varied caseload of Wills, trusts, probate and estate administration matters, with minimal supervision
  • Delivering high‑quality, empathetic client care, building trusted relationships with clients and their families
  • Advising on inheritance tax and basic estate planning, identifying risks and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Working collaboratively within the Private Client team, supporting junior colleagues and contributing to a positive culture
  • Meeting agreed billing and performance targets, while acting as an ambassador for the firm

Person specification: 

  • 4+ years PQE / Experience in Private Client

Commercial Property Solicitor 

Reporting: Reports to the Head of Department

Office Location: Windermere and other offices in South Lakes Cumbria

Overall purpose: To manage a varied and engaging commercial property caseload within a well-established and supportive team, delivering high-quality legal advice to a loyal and diverse client base. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with colleagues and clients in a collaborative environment, combining professional challenge with an excellent quality of life.

 Key accountabilities:

  • Managing a broad range of commercial property matters from instruction to post completion including disposals and acquisitions, landlord and tenant matters and refinancing.
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships through a pragmatic, responsive, and commercially minded approach
  • Working as part of a close-knit and experienced team, where knowledge-sharing and mutual support are actively encouraged

Maintain a well-organised file management system ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal requirements. Managing the financial aspects of matters responsibly, contributing to the overall success of departmental KPIs

Person specification: 

  • 4 years + PQE within Commercial Property
  • Proven experience of dealing with all aspects of Commercial Property

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Managing a diverse caseload of rural property transactions and agricultural matters for private and commercial clients
  • Work as part of an expert team on a range of diverse, sometimes novel and possibly complex matters
  • Demonstrating commercial awareness through accurate time recording, timely billing, and proactive credit control
  • Ensuring all files are managed in line with Lexcel and statutory compliance standards
  • Responding promptly and positively to new client enquiries

About the Role

We’re looking for a compassionate and confident Family Lawyer to join our friendly and well-regarded Family Law team at Thomson Hayton Winkley, part of the MAPD Group. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a supportive environment where your voice is heard and your development is valued.

Key Responsibilities

Each of our four offices is different to the other, with Kendal being the biggest and Kirkby Lonsdale the smallest.  Our Rural Law Practice office it J36 Rural Auction Centre is aimed at our farming and rural clients and has a very different feel altogether – in a good way! Bring your wellies!

We offer a broad range of legal work with teams delivering in the following areas: Wills, Trusts and Probate, Residential Property, Commercial Property, Commercial, Agricultural and Rural, Dispute Resolution and Family.  Lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants and secretaries all work together and we are all supported by our brilliant Operations team including our cashiers and receptionists.

From those just at the start of their careers to those who have been with Thomson Hayton Winkley for many years, we are all learning every day in a supportive, friendly environment.
